One Second (Story #2, Chapter 3)
Chapter Three
I wake with a start, confused at the unfamiliar location. I'm sitting on a bench in a hallway, my head on Ky's shoulder and his arm around my waist. His head rests against the wall, his eyes closed and breathing deep. All the events from today come crashing back in one giant wave. My brother is gone, forever. The balance will now shift at home. It used to be him and me against our parents; two against two. Now it's just me. It's not like my parents will notice or anything. But for me, the absence will be a huge, undeniable hole in my life; one that can never be replaced.
I begin to shake with fear and my breaths start to quick

Chapter One
Sirens. We all hear them. They rush by, interrupting our lives with their wailing; so we choose to pay little attention to them. No thoughts of, "I hope everyone is alright," or, "I hope they get there fast enough." No prayers sent along with the signals of tragedy. Until those sirens are meant for us or someone we love. Then, suddenly you're wondering why you never bothered to take a second out of your day to give a silent hope that the people are okay. Because in reality, those people can use all the hope they can get.

Chapter One
The cold metal of the chair bites into my back, unforgiving against my body. Sirens wail from outside and voices blend together to fill the depressing air. My hands shake uncontrollably as tears threaten to overflow. No one gives me a second look though; these symptoms are normal in a place like this.
Someone, a guy I think, throws himself into the chair next to mine. I don't react. Don't turn my head, don't speak. Just sit staring straight ahead.
Each time a nurse comes near me I tense, waiting for one of them to bring me the news I don't want to hear. The only thought that runs through my head is, he is okay, he will be okay.

Chapter Two
The world passes by in blurs. Dark, emotionless blurs of nothing.
Dead.
The word echoes in my mind with every footstep, every breath, every noise.
Dead.
Not him, me. The innocent not the guilty. But death doesn't care who it takes, only that there is life in its clutches.
With every beat of my heart I hear all the "if only's". If only I had gotten there sooner. If only I had made him go without me. If only it were me instead of him.
It only takes a second for a person's life to change; Max barely even had that. All it took was half a second and a crash and he was gone. Now, because of that half a second, I stand in a place

Chapter Two
The tears are still steadily flowing down my cheeks when the doctors kick me out of the room. They push me out into the hallway where I fall onto the floor, not caring that I'm in the way. People trip, yell, and push at me but I pay them no attention. The only thing I care about is the one thing that can never be returned to me.
When the world comes back, it comes back in a flood of senses. People move all around me, talking, laughing, crying. The smells of salt, blood, and soap fill the air like a poison, being choked down into the throats of people who don't deserve to be here. But they are. Some unchangeable force has broug
